A succulent themed cake smash for baby boy

Happy first birthday, Colton! This little guy is a Baby Plan graduate. I’ve had the pleasure of documenting all of his milestones this year… from his newborn portraits, tummy time milestone, sitter milestone, holiday portraits, and even an extended family portrait session. Now, it’s time to celebrate with his very own case smash session. I’ve known this family since Colton’s big sister, Elliana, was little too. It’s been such a joy to watch them both grow.

When we began to plan Colton’s cake smash, we looked to his sister’s cake smash for inspiration. Elliana’s cake smash was also succulent themed. We wanted to change things up and make sure the entire session felt a little more “masculine” for Colton. WIth that in mind, we stuck to natural textures with gold accents. It was just perfect for this little guy!!

As with all my cake smashes, we also took the time for some updated family portraits in the Hall of Springs in Saratoga Spa State Park. I’m so happy I got to see everyone again and I can’t wait until their next family photos!

Fall Family Portraits with an Outdoor Cake Smash

Some families love the idea of choosing a cake smash theme for their little one’s first birthday, and others want something classic and theme-free. That is why more and more families are opting for outdoor cake smashes when the weather is nice to showcase their little one in nature without any props. That is exactly what Ravi’s family wanted for his first birthday portraits, so we combined his fall family photos with a cake smash at the park, and it was perfect!

Just look at the gorgeous and colorful leaves lining this path in Saratoga Spa State Park! It was perfect with the golden sunlight streaming in through the leaves, and I loved this spot for their portrait session!

For the most simple and classic cake smash look, nothing beats a white high chair and a simple cake! A fancy cake topper completes the look, and the focus really stays on the birthday boy!

This little guy really got into it, and he had a frosting beard in no time!

A simple white and floral cake smash for Baby Isla

Now that is the face of a baby who loves her birthday cake!!!

We chose a simple theme for Isla’s cake smash with white balloons, twinkle lights, and a hint of blush florals and greenery. This let her really stand out in her perfectly adorable blush pink romper!

I’m going to tell you a secret. Isla didn’t really love the idea of a cake smash the first time we tried to do her portraits. We had finished up her family portraits in the park and headed back to the studio for her cake smash, and like many of the post-quarantine babies, she had a little heightened stranger anxiety and was a bit nervous in the studio. After pulling out all the stops and doing all of my usual tricks to help her feel comfortable, it just wasn’t her day so we decided to reschedule and try again a few days later.

And wow, am I glad we did! Just look at her huge smiles! Isla was so happy on the second day and she did amazing with her cake. We captured so many adorable smiles and laughs, and she really had so much fun.

Sometimes that’s all it takes — hitting the pause button, working around the baby’s mood, and trying again later. No big deal!

An Easter Bunny Cake Smash Session

Who says cake smashes are just for one year olds? Clark is turning TWO and we had so much fun with his birthday session!

We start all of our cake smash sessions with family portraits, and I loved capturing these sweet brothers together for some playful family portraits at our Saratoga Springs studio. There were lots of tickles and laughs, and so many beautiful, natural smiles!

We planned a pastel Easter bunny cake smash for the birthday boy, and I loved this colorful balloon garland with bunny balloons. I couldn’t bear to pop it after the session, and it’s been hanging in our dining room all month! Can you believe that these balloons last for weeks & weeks?!?!

Clark was a big fan of his cake, and he dug right into it and loved going after the really big bites!

Big brother Zak joined in for a few bites, too!

We finished with a very cheerful bathtub splash!

A Pink, Lavender & Peach Cake Smash with Balloon Garland

You guyssss!!! This is one of my favorite cake smash balloon garlands to date. I love this combination of soft pink, lavender, and peach, and it was so perfect for Lyla’s first birthday portrait session at our Saratoga Springs studio.

She wore the most adorable lace and tulle dress, an Amazon find that we see often on baby girls in the studio, and a recommended dress in our What to Wear/Where to Shop for your Cake Smash post!

Seriously. How cute is this joyful baby?!?! So adorable.

What I love about this dress is that it’s short enough for babies to move around in without getting caught under their legs when they’re trying to crawl or stand up. Lyla was able to move about happily, and once we gave her a spoon she was all smiles! (until the very end, when we captured a really cute sad face!)

Bathtub splashes save the day! Our baby-sized clawfoot tub is the most requested prop in the studio, and for good reason! It’s perfect for little ones who love the water, and it’s 100% cute.

A Bright & Bold Balloon Garland Cake Smash for Oliver

Another Baby Planner has turned one! I met Oliver when he was still in the hospital for a Fresh 48 session, and I’ve loved documenting this sweet boy’s milestones this year through our Baby Plan. And now he is officially a toddler!

We started off his birthday session with some family portraits to celebrate surviving their first year of parenthood. These are always such fun family portraits, and I love seeing Oliver’s playful personality!

Doesn’t he look like such a big kid here?!?!

We planned a colorful cake smash to fit his fun & vibrant personality. Lots of balloons made it extra festive, and the confetti balloons were especially fun! (Fun side note: when prepping the balloon garland in the studio with my 22-month old toddler at home, I had to tell him more than once not to sit on the confetti balloons because they would pop. Of course, guess which ones were his favorite to sit on?!?! BIG MESS!!)

Oliver dug right into his birthday cake, and we thought he was going to sit right on top of it, but somehow he managed to keep it in tact here!

He loved splashing in the clawfoot tub afterwards! So much fun for this sweet birthday boy!

The Best Places to Shop for Cake Smash Outfits

If your little one’s birthday portraits are coming up, you’re probably wondering where to find the perfect outfit for their cake smash! Lucky for you, I have helped hundreds of families find adorable outfits for their little ones to wear during their portrait sessions, and I have so many tips for you!

Read on for some tips on what to look for, and at the end you’ll find a list of my favorite places to shop!

Suspenders are sooooooo cute on little boys!

I especially love this look without a shirt to show off their cute baby bellies.

Choose fancier fabrics that photograph beautifully.

Tulle, lace, sweater knits, chiffon, ruffles, layers, and small patterns (like floral!). All of these have some texture and are so much more interesting than a plain cotton onesie!

Head to toe outfits.

I always photograph babies barefoot. Those cute baby toes are so classic, and shoes just look strange and awkward when they’re doing a cake smash. But don’t forget about their head! Maybe you want a cute little crown, birthday hat, headband, or floral halo.

You can find great outfits in the regular baby section at most stores!

For boys, jeans, knit pants, or even swim trunks (if they fit the theme like a pool party of underwater cake smash). For girls, look for rompers or short dresses, and make sure it’s easy for them to crawl around in and that the hem won’t get caught on their legs when crawling.

My favorite stores & websites for cake smash outfits!

Amazon. Seriously, they have soooooo many rompers, knit pants, little dresses, diaper covers, and even birthday hats! Plus, you can’t beat the 2 day shipping.

Jamie Kay. This online shop is filled with adorable rompers and knits for boys and girls in gorgeous, natural fabrics.

Lulu & Roo. Stripes are their specialty, and their outfits & colors are so cute!

Maisonette. Sooooo many unique options at this online children’s boutique, and I just love the details on all of their outfits!

Cora & Violet. They have plenty of whimsical rompers that will go beautifully with many themes.

Zara Kids. I especially love their sweater knits!

Baby Gap. Lots of great classics for pants, summer dresses, and swim trunks or swimsuits for a water theme.

Target - Cat & Jack. They often have cute outfits & one pieces that change almost monthly, and they are excellent quality & with unique details.

Carters. This is where I find knit pants for boys in neutral colors (white, navy, gray).

Primary. If you’re going for a more colorful theme and looking for basics that your child will be sure to wear again, head on over to primary.com and choose leggings or a romper in a color that matches your theme!

Trish Scully Child. Absolutely gorgeous dresses for little girls, with all of the feminine details that you are going to fall in love with! Lace, tulle, florals. Their dresses are so beautiful!

Janie & Jack. Classic looks that they will wear again, and beautifully made.

How to Choose a Cake Smash Theme for Your Baby's First Birthday Portraits

When my son turned one I had the hardest time deciding what to do for his cake smash theme. I mean, seriously, I’m a cake smash photographer so you’d think this would be easy for me! But no.

I went back and forth with so many ideas and finally settled on one that tied into our family’s story. My husband and I spotted a llama in downtown Saratoga Springs on our very first date, and over the years it became a lucky find for us whenever we spotted a llama. So llamas were kind of our thing years before they became “trendy”, and we settled on a llama theme for our little boy! It worked out perfectly because he had so many llama books and toys, and it was now his thing, too!

So if you’re like me and you’re wondering how in the world to pick a theme or an idea for your child’s first birthday portrait session, don’t worry! This blog post is filled with ideas to inspire you!

Just pick a color - no theme!

I love working with just a few colors and incorporating them into a festive setup with balloons, confetti, garlands, and cutouts.

PRO TIP: Choose the nursery colors and you’ll have the perfect spot to hang your portraits!

Baby Shark, Oh the Places You’ll Go (travel theme), Peter Rabbit, and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star are just a few that we’ve done based on books and songs!

All Around the World! A Pink and Gold Travel Theme for a First Birthday Cake Smash

Penelope is ONE! I’ve loved following along with this family’s journey into parenthood and celebrating all of their sweet girl’s milestones this year as part of the Baby Plan.

At the end of her first year we did family portraits at our Saratoga Springs studio, followed by the most adorable cake smash! Penelope’s parents love to travel, so we did a travel theme inspired by this session from earlier this year, but with a girly touch of pink & sparkles! I painted the backdrop for her session and covered it in glitter, and then added my signature fluffy clouds & twinkle lights.

A Snoopy Inspired Cake Smash with Saratoga Springs Baby Photographer

Now this was definitely a unique theme for a studio cake smash this year — SNOOPY! This family loves Snoopy, and they even did this as a baby shower theme before their son was born! So when it came time to plan his first year cake smash, they knew right away what they wanted to do for his portraits.

First we started with family portraits at the Hall of Springs in Saratoga Springs. It’s only 2 miles from the studio, and it’s one of the most versatile locations for family portraits, especially when we’re going to head back to the studio afterwards for the cake smash!

The birthday boy LOVED the camera, and he had so much fun playing and showing off his blossoming personality! I love all of the smiles that we captured!

And now, it’s time for SNOOPY! We pulled it all together with a beautiful balloon garland in colors to match his nursery.

He dug right into his cake, and he gave us the most adorable expressions throughout his cake smash!

Sea, Sun, and CAKE! Holden's Cake Smash at the Beach with Cape Cod Baby Photographer

How is this sweet boy already ONE?!?!

It feels like we were just welcoming him to the studio for his newborn portraits. Then we blinked and it was time for his 6 month milestone session. And now suddenly this Baby Planner is one and we’re celebrating his first birthday with a cake smash at the same beach where we did his mama’s maternity portraits a year earlier!

This was my first cake smash in the sand at one of my favorite beaches on Cape Cod, and it was so much fun! This coastal family loves everything about the beach, and it was only fitting that we tie that into every single one of their son’s portrait sessions during the first year.

When I mentioned the idea of doing his cake smash at the beach, his mom was so excited and started envisioning her sweet boy smashing his birthday cake on the boardwalk where they had posed as a family of four a short year earlier. And now, can you even handle how much cuteness is packed into one portrait?!?!

These big brothers dote on their little brother, and Holden soaks it up! He is such a happy baby, and I love watching the ways that his family showers him in love!

When planning a cake smash at the beach, figuring out what to wear is simple — a swimsuit, of course! Holden looked adorable in his little swim trunks, and they showed off his cute belly and arm rolls to celebrate this stage of “babyhood on the brink of toddlerhood” that he is in right now!

Our Latest baby plan graduate - a pretty floral cake smash for Ella

We have another Baby Plan graduate! And ohhhhh my goodness, she is just perfectly adorable and the cutest little one year old you ever did see!

If you haven’t heard about our Baby Plan, it’s a way to celebrate all of your little one’s milestones with beautiful portraits throughout the first year. From a newborn session, to a sitter session, all the way through a cake smash with family portraits at the end of the year! Ella turned one, and she was very excited about it! We started with family portraits, soaking up the last rays of sunshine of the summer while celebrating her first steady steps with mom and dad.

A Panda Bear Cake Smash with Saratoga Springs Baby Photographer

I love starting our first birthday sessions with family portraits, and I was so excited to welcome this family back to the studio for their son’s cake smash by starting first with some gorgeous family portraits at the Hall of Springs in Saratoga Springs. It’s only 2 miles from our studio, and it’s filled with so many unique and beautiful spots for your family’s photos!

Jackson let his fun-loving personality shine! His favorite color is yellow, so his parents dressed him in all the yellow and even asked to incorporate his favorite hue into the cake smash decor. I love that!!

We celebrated Jackson’s first birthday with a panda bear cake smash! Bamboo backdrop, panda bears & bamboo on his cake, and yellow paper lanterns for a festive touch. I absolutely adore how this set came together, and Jackson LOVED his cake, too!

Most babies get really excited when we hand them a wooden spoon partway through the cake smash, and Jackson loved digging into his cake with the spoon and watching the frosting fly everywhere when he was smashing it!

A red, white, and blue firework cake smash for a 4th of July baby!

Fourth of July babies are one of my favorite themes for the summertime!

Baby Axel was born on July 3, and I loved celebrating this little firecracker’s first birthday with a red, white, and blue cake smash. This gorgeous fabric flag is one of my favorite props that I’ve made (see it in last year’s cake smash with Oscar!) , and I spray painted fireworks on the floor for an extra special touch for the birthday boy.

Axel LOVED his cake! He was the happiest baby and he was all smiles and giggles once he tasted the frosting. He truly was the most efficient cake smasher that I have ever had the pleasure of photographing. I always like to look back at the timestamp on my camera for quick babies like this one, and he spent 8 minutes from start to finish with his cake, and less than 1.5 minutes in the tub! In the end we got a full gallery of smiles, laughs, and lots of cute little expressions from the birthday boy.

A Pool Party Cake Smash for Baby Luciano - Clifton Park Cake Smash Photographer

It’s a POOL PARTY!!!!

Summer is always such a fun time, and I love showcasing classic childhood fun in our birthday sessions. Everyone always loves a pool party, and when Luciano’s mama suggested a pool party cake smash to go along with his first birthday theme, I knew exactly what we would do for his set!

Beach balls, a striped beach towel, lots of splishing & splashing, and the cutest little swim trunks and sunglasses for the tiny swimmer.

First we started with family portraits at the Hall of Springs in SPAC, Saratoga Springs. I just love how relaxed and cuddly these portraits are of one-year old Luciano with his mommy & daddy. It seems like just a short while ago that we were celebrating this sweet boy’s arrival in his serene nursery with a lifestyle newborn session, and now he’s full of smiles and giggles and turning ONE!

This adorable rocking horse is from his nursery and was in his newborn portraits, and I was so happy that they brought it to his birthday session for a few portraits, too!

Luciano LOVED the bathtub! He was all smiles once he was in the water, and I love how expressive this little guy became when he was splashing around!

A pretty peony cake smash for twins with boston cake smash photographer

Anya & Bela turned one, and celebrated with a truly beautiful peony cake smash at our Attleboro baby portrait studio! I absolutely loved celebrating the twins’ first birthday, and they were such a joy with so much personality!

We started with family portraits at Capron Park in Attleboro to capture lots of sweet cuddles and hugs from mom and dad. This is always such a beautiful location, and I love the trees and pavilion in the background!

Next we headed back to the studio for their soft, feminine, and floral cake smash! I created a brand new backdrop for the birthday girls with these gorgeous crepe paper peonies. We even used “one” cake toppers with a cute and subtle pink floral design printed on them!

What I LOVED about this session was how differently the two sisters approached their cakes. Anya (left) was dainty and methodical, while Bela (right) dug right in, knocked it off the stand, and turned into what we fondly called “the cake monster” as she stood up with frosting-filled hands and walked towards the camera!

I love this one with Anya looking to her sister to see how to smash and eat the cake!

Lena's Simple Peony Cake Smash

All of our first birthday sessions start off with family portraits. During the cooler months, we do these portraits indoors at our Saratoga Springs studio. We always use a simple neutral backdrop so that your family photos will look amazing in any room of your home.

I love celebrating ONE YEAR of parenthood with families! Sessions are filled with laughs, baby cuddles, tickles, songs, and games. Birthday girl Lena loved it, and she gave us the cutest little smiles!

Next up was her cake smash. We planned a simple peony garland for the decor with some white balloons to keep it festive for her first birthday. Add in a flower crown and one of our baby rompers from the STUDIO BABY WARDROBE, and it all came together perfectly!

Lena’s cake stayed on the cake stand for only 15 seconds.

She was truly a master smasher! She knocked the cake off right away, and then she dug right in! I love her huge smiles, and cute little giggles, and the way her hands filled with sticky cake & frosting so that it looked like she was wearing big mittens made out of cake.

Face first! See?? She truly was a pro!

Of course we finished with a bathtub splash, and this sweet baby girl was as happy as can be. I mean, really… cake AND a bubble bath? It doesn’t get any better than that!

World, meet Milani. The happiest baby girl who just turned ONE!

This little sweetheart joined me at our Saratoga Springs portrait studio for her first birthday session, and I loved celebrating with a simple boho cake smash with lots of white and just a hint of blush pink and greenery.

We used our teepee (check out our super popular DIY post here!) and some twinkle lights, and then Milani was center stage!

She was so cute and kept wanting to share her cake with her parents!

And when she clapped for herself, she melted everyone’s hearts!

We have another Baby Planner graduate!

I can’t believe that Charlotte is ONE! Her mama first reached out to me early last year and we discovered that our due dates were only one day apart! Charlotte came early, and then our Grayson arrived early, and the two have enjoyed a bunch of play dates & walks together this year!

We had such a great time at our Saratoga Springs portrait studio for her birthday session, and I just love all of the cute family cuddles that we captured to celebrate their first year as a family of three.

Charlotte brought her favorite little elephant and she was so sweet and cuddly with her toy! This is what ONE looks like for their sweet baby girl!

With a spring birthday close to Easter, we planned a simple floral cake smash with a “Somebunny is One” theme to go along with her birthday party theme. I love how it came together with this cute bunny cake topper!

While dainty, she was definitely cute digging into her birthday cake for the cake smash!

I think the wooden spoon was her favorite part of the whole thing! Just look at that beautiful smile!
